WARDOGS low FPS and stuttering fix: why it stutters and what actually helps

Updated 2026-09-09 · Fixes

Three kinds of stutter, three fixes. Hitches in the first 10 minutes are shader compilation; let it finish, don't reinstall. Constant unevenness with GPU under 90% is CPU-bound; drop Shadows, Effects and Fog. Sudden freezes then a burst of frames on an 8 GB card is VRAM; drop Textures to Medium. Do the Windows and driver tweaks once and leave them.

Find which one you have

Turn on a frame-time overlay (Steam's in-game FPS counter with the overlay allowed, or RivaTuner after you've confirmed it doesn't crash EAC on your system).

1. Shader compile stutter

Normal on first launch and after every driver or game patch. Play a full round; the cache builds and it stops. Don't clear the cache to "fix" it, that restarts the problem. If it never settles, that's the stuck loading page.

2. CPU-bound

3. GPU-bound

DLSS/FSR Quality first, then Textures one notch, then resolution scale. Frame generation last, and only if you're above 60 base FPS. Presets by card are on the best settings page.

4. VRAM

8 GB cards at 1440p on High textures spill into system RAM and freeze. Textures Medium, and turn off any "high resolution texture" pack if the game offers one. 12 GB cards are fine at 1440p High; 4K wants 16 GB.

5. Windows and driver, once

6. Network stutter

If the world freezes but your FPS counter keeps ticking, that's packet loss, not performance. Cable in, and read the lag and high ping page.

FAQ

Why does WARDOGS stutter for the first 10 minutes?

Shader compilation. Unreal compiles shaders as new effects and weapons appear; it settles after a map's worth of play and after every driver or game update it starts again.

Why is my GPU only at 60% usage?

You're CPU-bound. 100 players and destruction load the CPU; lower resolution won't help, lower Shadows, Effects and Fog will.

Does Game Mode help?

Marginally. Turn it on, but the big wins are HAGS off, overlays off and the CPU-side graphics settings.
